The
mountains of Bozburun are bare with nothing of the green that
Marmaris offers, but the sea is lovely and clean. Now that there
is a road connecting Marmaris and Bozburun, many people come here
either to vacation or to settle. Boatbuilding is an ancient art
at Bozburun and the boats here are cheaper than those built at
Marmaris and Bodrum. Some people prefer to come here to do business.
Bozburun has also won renown for its sponges and divers.
SÖGÜT
At
Sögüt there is a grove of liquidamber trees surrounded by pine
woods, pink oleanders and purple bougainvilleas. The trees in
this grove grow so closely together that they keep the sun out,
and the ground at their feet has become marshy.
A
barbed wire fence goes around the grove to protect it, but this
cannot keep out the goasts and chickens.
SELIMIYE
There
is a five kilometer road joining. Bozburun to Selimiye, which
is a lovely fishing village on Hisarönü Bay. The soil is good
here, the people are friendly and hospitable, and the bay forms
a large natural harbour. There are some historical remains at
Selimiye.
THE
MOUNTAIN AND FOREST VILLAGES
The
sea with its yatchs and the coastline are beautiful. Yet there are
those who prefer the mountains and the woods. The countryside around
Marmaris has lovely villages nestled away in the hills and trees,
and here is a village near Bozburun. Everything is just as it was
thousand of years ago. Many tourists come up to look with envy on
this quiet, peaceful way of life.
